What the Hummingbird has taught me about Quality Improvement.
From Feeling Overwhelmed to Taking the First Drop!
My approach to quality improvement is deeply inspired by the story of the hummingbird. When we look at the complex systems and challenges around us, it is very easy to feel overwhelmed. We stand back, watch, and worry. But real change begins with taking a simple, deliberate step and helping wherever you can, just like the hummingbird carrying drops of water to fight a massive forest fire.
At first, it can feel like nothing is happening, and your small individual improvement efforts barely scratch the surface. But patience and persistence matter. Eventually, just like the other animals joined the hummingbird, your consistency will create room for others to collaborate and lend a hand.
Quality improvement isn’t about watching the fire burn; it’s about refusing to stay paralyzed and instead putting it out through consistent, small efforts. This story keeps me grounded, reminding me that as long as I take that first step and keep going, I am doing the best I can.
