My ACQUIRE Leadership Journey: Building a QI Culture for Quality Care
Because quality care is not just about what we do, it is about how we learn, improve, and partner with our clients
When I started the ACQUIRE A3 Experiential Leadership Course, my project was Improving Client Satisfaction. What began as a QI project became a journey of building a stronger Quality Improvement culture at Baba Dogo Health Centre.
The course, especially the A3 Halfway Foundation training, helped us anchor our improvement work on Kenya Quality Model for Health (KQMH) standards. I learned that patient safety is not negotiable and that patient experience is an essential part of quality care. Quality is not an event; it is a culture.
Three concepts transformed how we work:
1. Data use to drive improvement
We stopped relying on assumptions and started using real data from client exit interviews, feedback books, and client feedback scores. The data revealed gaps in waiting times, communication, and follow-up. Using QI tools, we identified root causes, tested change ideas, and tracked our progress using run charts. This shifted us from blame to learning and made improvement visible to the whole team.
2. Clients as co-producers of care
We changed our mindset from providing care for clients to co-producing care with them. We involved clients in identifying solutions and empowered them through clear health information. Their voices became an important part of our improvement process.
3. Leadership involvement drives change
Leadership engagement strengthened ownership, teamwork, accountability, and follow-through. It helped us move beyond implementing activities to institutionalizing Quality Improvement.
One of our key achievements was introducing a standardized online client feedback system, which increased feedback rates from 10% to over 80%. Integrating the feedback into our Quality Improvement Team reviews and follow-up processes helped bring the voice of the client into routine decision-making.
This journey taught us that sustainable improvement requires more than QI tools. It requires data, teamwork, leadership, client partnership, and a culture of continuous learning.
This is not the end; it is the beginning of leading change for quality care where data guides us, clients partner with us, and quality becomes our culture.
