The ACQUIRE Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QI-PS) Experiential Leadership Program is a 16-week, practice-based course designed to translate quality improvement theory into measurable frontline impact. The program supports hospital-based, multidisciplinary teams to apply improvement science, data, and evidence-based practices to real quality or patient safety challenges within their institutions.

Through a structured, mentored learning journey, participating teams design, test, and refine context-specific improvement interventions. Teams build practical systems for data collection and use, strengthen teamwork and leadership for improvement, and develop sustainable processes that respond to local care delivery challenges.

The program is delivered virtually and connects healthcare teams across sub-Saharan Africa with ACQUIRE mentor-coaches and peer QI teams. Participants meet weekly within their institutional teams to advance their improvement work, and bi-weekly in facilitated sessions with mentor-coaches and peer teams to reflect, learn, and troubleshoot collectively. The learning model intentionally blends short didactic sessions on improvement theory and tools with experiential group learning, where teams progressively share lessons from implementation.

Participation in the Experiential Program is open to healthcare workers across all professional cadres whose institutions completed the ACQUIRE QI-PS Theory Leadership Course (2024/25), ensuring a strong theoretical foundation upon which applied learning is built.

By the end of the program, participants are expected to:

    • Demonstrate practical understanding of the science and methods of continuous quality improvement and patient safety

    • Apply improvement tools to analyze systems, measure performance, and guide decision-making

    • Lead a locally relevant quality improvement project at their site

    • Design, test, and learn from at least two improvement interventions using structured improvement methods

    • This program moves beyond learning about quality improvement—equipping teams to lead improvement in practice.

The strength of the ACQUIRE QI-PS Experiential Program is ultimately reflected in the people and teams who step forward to lead improvement in practice. The 2026 cohort represents institutions and healthcare professionals who have committed to translating learning into action; bringing quality improvement and patient safety to the frontline of care delivery.
